Thou Shall Not…

“The grass is always greener on the other side…” I grew up hearing this sayin’ so much, well it just sticks. It sticks like country kitchen neck-bones to your thighs. Ms. Jurnee Smolett-Bell in Temptation did not heed that simple advice, and her character, good ole Judith grew up in the South-walking down the dust roads to school and church. Judith was raised in a good Christian home…but it’s always the      preacher’s kid doing the evil works…

Adam Meets Eve…

In the beginning she manages to have a great relationship with Lance Gross aka Brice, her childhood sweetheart, and they marry. Then they moved to the big city, it seemed like the DC area. Brice was working his way up in a small pharmacy, while Judith was counseling rich men on finding dates. Frequently Brice’s job would take up most of his time, trying to make an honest living. Now, I have been a part of a crowd of women discussing the black man’s ability to keep a job, and that conversation never did favor the brotha. Well in this untraditional Tyler Perry movie, we see a hard-working man holding it down. All he wants is some rice and gravy, and to play the guitar in his boxers…Lance Gross, you can play your guitar in your boxers for me anytime!

Color the Apple Red!

Jurnee on the other hand was seeking excitement…Married to him for six years, she was not happy with her progress in life. She was suppose to have a successful counseling practice, but instead she was working at a match making company and playing wifey to a man who was not giving her “enough” attention. (Fastforward…)

Look out…Snake!

And then “He” comes along…Mr.Big, (character name Harley, actor name: Robbie Jones #new-black-guy-in-movies)…in a red corvette…jets…and hot sex…did I say hot sex? Well he was also a dope fiend and woman-beater with HIV. Dam, don’t those be the ones who be tryna’ to sweep us off our feet with their suave conversations and big toys…? (vernacular-throw-back…yep!)

I am reminded of a classic TLC song,

Don’t go chasing waterfalls…

Listen to the rivers and the lakes like you use to…

I know that you gonna have it your way or nothing at all…

But I think you’re moving too fast…

 No Fruit For You…

Oooooh Jurnee…Small town girl in a big city…It makes me think of the intro to Stevie Wonder song, Living For the City. Growing up to Motown and old school classics, I have learned to relate everything to…Music…

Before you knew it, innocent Judith who did not care about the glitz and glam was now listening to Kim Kardashian on how to dress #big-mistake…She found her sexiness, swagging her skinny self all over Mr.I-Got-More-Money-Than-Your-Husband…And so what happened to Judith?

long deliberate pause…

She became a dope fiend, HIV positive, crying-to-get-her-man-back sinnerTalking about…My heart hurts after Harley threw some golden blows to her face and left her in an expensive porcelain bathtub…And that is basically how that story goes…

All Cause of Sin, My Friend…

She remained friends with her ex-husband Brice…but of course he had to leave her, he was not the one who cheated. God also spared him HIV. So therefore he found himself a young tender and got married and had two lovely little children, while Ms.I-want-to-wanted worked for the government as a marriage counselor…

Another old sayin’, “You never miss a good woman till she is gone…”, well in this case…We have to replace woman with man… “You will never miss a good man, till he is gone…”

Moral of the Story…

So before we start jumping over pastures ladies to see what makes the green grass grow so tall and the cows so fat and happy…Let’s appreciate the fact that we still have grass growing under our feet, and figure out a way to make it grow stronger instead of taking the easy route and leaping over the fence…You might get mad cow…

PS…Temptation was an excellent movie that you should go see, it makes you appreciate a slower pace in life…especially when it comes to relationships…                                                   ©NEEMA
